Unique Acacia Tree Could Nourish Soils And Life In Africa
Nairobi, Kenya (SPX) Aug 31, 2009
Scientists have said at the 2nd World Congress of Agroforestry that a type of acacia tree with an unusual growth habit-unlike virtually all other trees-holds particular promise for farmers in Africa as a free source of nitrogen for their soils that could last generations. India faces 'severe' drought: PM
New Delhi (AFP) Aug 29, 2009
India faces a "severe" drought but the country's ample food grain stock will ensure no one goes hungry, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Saturday. Monsoon rains, the lifeline for farms that support more that half of India's 1.1 billion population, have been scant and about 40 percent of India's districts have declared a drought. "No one has control over drought. It's a severe ... more

    Djeddah-Thiaroye Kaw, Senegal (AFP) Aug 27, 2009
Every year, in the rainy season, the floors of Omar Barro's house in the suburbs of Senegal's capital Dakar are submerged, like others all around. "We are like fish," he says. The flooding, which on Thursday led the government to enact an emergency plan, forces this 17-year-old tailor's assistant and thousands like him to "eat, pray and do everything in the water." Sandbags mark out the ... more

Despair as drought cripples 'Australia's Mississippi'
Cobram, Australia (AFP) Aug 24, 2009
Farmer Mazzareno Bisogni fights back tears as he stands among the remains of trees he planted 35 years ago, victims of a drought hitting "Australia's Mississippi". Bisogni's orchard lies in the heart of the once-mighty Murray-Darling river system which irrigates Australia's food bowl, the vast southeastern corner responsible for 40 percent of agricultural output. The eight-year 'big dry' ... more
