Rural communities lead Nepal's green fightback
Kavre, Nepal (AFP) Dec 15, 2009
Thirty years ago, Nepalese farmer Badri Prasad Jangam realised that the once thickly-wooded hillside that overlooks his home had been transformed into a barren slope. Decades of deforestation had taken their toll, stripping away the topsoil, affecting vital underground water sources and threatening to bring disaster to a community entirely dependent on farming for its livelihood. Now the ... more

Taiwan fishermen fall victim to climate change: report
Taipei (AFP) Dec 13, 2009
The haul of grey mullets Taiwan fishermen catch each year has plunged from a peak of 2.7 million 10 years ago to just 100,000 in a worrying sign of damaging climate change, it was reported Sunday. Fishermen on the west of the island used to look forward to the winter when cold currents from north Asia would bring huge shoals of mullets to the Taiwan Straits to lay eggs. Over the past few ... more

Anchovy is king in Peru, for now
Lima (AFP) Dec 12, 2009
The most fished species in the world, anchovy stock is at historic highs in Peru that may be short-lived due to climate change and overfishing.
