Politically correct food on the menu in Britain
London (AFP) Dec 30, 2009
From foie gras produced without making birds suffer to "sustainable" fish, British retailers and restaurants are fast embracing politically correct food, helped by celebrity-fuelled pressure. Faux (false) gras is the ethical answer to the foodstuff which has been the bane of campaigners for decades for the way it's produced: force-feeding ducks or geese to create engorged livers that yield the creamy pate. Low yield, strikes hit Argentine fisheries
Buenos Aires (UPI) Dec 31, 2009
Amid worries over Argentina's agricultural sales abroad, Argentine fisheries have been hit by falling exports and prospects of ever decreasing yields because of decline in marine life in the country's waters, industry scientists said. Added to those long-term setbacks for Argentina's natural resources, the fisheries trade is also hit by labor disputes, strikes and a spillover of discont ... more

Chinese dairy closed again over tainted milk: state media
Beijing (AFP) Jan 1, 2010
A Chinese dairy shut down during the 2008 tainted milk scandal has been closed again after tests found some of its products contained the same toxic chemical, state media reported Friday. Shanghai Panda Dairy was shuttered and three executives arrested Thursday after an investigation found eight batches of its powdered milk and condensed milk had "illegally high" levels of melamine, the Shan ... more

Australian residents urged to flee 'house-high' wildfires
Sydney (AFP) Dec 29, 2009
Australian officials urged residents to evacuate a wheat farming district in the west of the country Tuesday as towering wildfires with flames higher than rooftops threatened homes. People in the Dandaragan area north of Perth were told to flee immediately as the fast-moving and out-of-control blaze, fanned by "catastrophic" conditions in Western Australia, showered embers. "Homes will b ... more

Hanoi (AFP) Dec 31, 2009
The Red River that divides Hanoi is at its lowest level in more than a century, and global warming could be a factor, a Vietnamese official said on Thursday. "The level of the Red River was measured at only 0.66 metres (2.2 feet) on Tuesday morning, the lowest level in more than 100 years," said Le Thanh Hai, deputy director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. Argentine soya boom a blow to corn growers
Buenos Aires (UPI) Dec 29, 2009
Argentina's record crops of soybean have caused dismay among corn and sunflower growers who see the government's emphasis on lucrative soybean exports as a potential blow to their agricultural crops, essential to food security. Last year Argentina earned about $24 billion from soybean exports, which are now seen by many growers as a good money spinner when compared with conventional cr ... more

Rain harvesting saves Tuscon water
Tucson (UPI) Dec 28, 2009
Tucson's push to use rainwater to meet landscaping needs could serve as a model for dry regions throughout the nation, Arizona environmentalists said. Beginning next year, new businesses in Tucson must use rainwater for at least half of their landscaping needs. If all of Tuscon's rainwater could be collected, it would amount to about 75 percent of the water delivered to homes an ... more
