Beijing (AFP) Jan 26, 2010
Dog and cat meat - age-old delicacies in China - could be off the menu in the food-loving nation under its first law against animal abuse, state press said Tuesday. People who eat either animal, both of which are viewed as promoting bodily warmth, would face fines of up to 5,000 yuan (730 dollars) and up to 15 days in jail if the law is passed, the Chongqing Evening News said. It said "organisations" involved in the practice would be fined from 10,000 to 500,000 yuan. The report gave no other ... read more

Stable Climate And Plant Domestication Linked
New York NY (SPX) Jan 26, 2010
Sustainable farming and the introduction of new crops relies on a relatively stable climate, not dramatic conditions attributable to climate change. Basing their argument on evolutionary, ecological, genetic and agronomic considerations, Dr. Shahal Abbo, from the Levi Eshkol School of Agriculture at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and colleagues, demonstrate why climate change is not the likely cause of plant domestication in the Near East. Rather, the variety of crops in the Near East ... read more

Washington DC (SPX) Jan 26, 2010
Today's farmers are interested in wind energy because they're good managers; farming is all about maximizing profits and reducing risk. Wind energy does both. It's an additional, steady source of income that doesn't require extra work, a second crop that can be harvested without effort or significant use of land. Beijing (AFP) Jan 23, 2010
Five people have been jailed for spilling industrial waste into a drinking water source, causing the supply for a city of five million people to be cut off for a week, state media reported Saturday. Three petrochemical company managers in Huai'an, eastern China, hired two private contractors in February last year to empty waste into an irrigation ditch connected to the city's drinking water supply, Xinhua news agency said.
