Pacific nations vie to create OPEC-style tuna cartel
Koror (AFP) Feb 25, 2010
Leaders of eight Pacific nations responsible for a quarter of the world's tuna catch vowed Thursday to conserve stocks of the fish and increase their own financial return from the lucrative industry. Despite their waters producing much of the world's tuna, the impoverished nations receive only three to four percent of the wholesale value of the catch, which is mainly controlled by foreign companies. At a summit in the Palau capital Koror, the eight leaders vowed to coordinate efforts to increase ... read more

Fury Of The Earth
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Feb 23, 2010
When the 7.0 magnitude earthquake ripped apart Haiti, I was reminded of how vulnerable we are to the Earth's natural systems. Despite our ability to drastically change the climate, in the end we are subject to the forces of nature, whether they have been unleashed as a result of human actions or not. The images below were taken by the EO-1 spacecraft managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight ... more

Fears for motorists in flooded Madeira carpark
Funchal, Portugal (AFP) Feb 22, 2010
For more than 30 hours, rescuers have pumped millions of litres of water and mud from an underground car park in Madeira's main town Funchal, fearing motorists were trapped there during flash floods that have devastated the Portuguese island. "There are people down there for sure. I escaped in time but I heard cries and saw people carried away by the waters," Norberto Vieira, a motorist whos ... more

Scientists see early warning to damaging El Nino
Paris (AFP) Feb 21, 2010
Weather experts say they have a tip that could give up to 14 months' warning before the onset of an El Nino, the weather anomaly that whacks countries around the Pacific and affects southern Africa and even Europe. At present, scientists are unable to give little more than a few months' notice that an El Nino is in the offing, which is often too late for farmers, fishermen and others to prep ... more

A Review Of Vegetated Buffer Efficacy
Madison WI (SPX) Feb 22, 2010
Environmental regulators and scientists are making concerted efforts to reduce these pollutions using mitigation tools called best management practices (BMPs). As promising and effective BMPs, vegetated buffers are gradually gaining in popularity. However, lack of quantification on their mitigation efficacies limits their implementation in agricultural fields to reduce nonpoint source pollutions. Scientists at the University of California, Davis, reviewed more than 300 papers, analyzed the data fr ... read more
