Bordeaux vintners look to Asia to drain cellars
Bordeaux, France (AFP) March 16, 2010
Hong Kong has emerged as the fastest growing wine hub while China's seemingly unquenchable thirst for wine has ousted the United States as Bordeaux's number one client outside Europe. "Bordeaux holds a special place in China," said Don St. Pierre Jr., chief executive at ASC Greater China, the largest importer of premium wine in China, in an email to AFP. "I do not think there is any region in the world that competes with Bordeaux - none are viewed to have the same history or pedigree." Bor ... read more

At least 30 dead, thousands evacuated in Kazakh floods
Taldykorgan, Kazakhstan (AFP) March 12, 2010
At least 30 people were killed and thousands evacuated from their homes in southern Kazakhstan Friday when two burst dams unleashed massive flooding, officials said. Flood waters from rivers swollen by unusually heavy winter snowfalls and an early spring spilled over the walls of a dam in the southern Aksuisky district and washed away a second in the nearby Karatalsky district. By Friday ... more

Europe to argue for bluefin tuna trade ban
Brussels (AFP) March 10, 2010
The king of Japanese sushi and sashimi may disappear from menus after Europe joined the United States on Wednesday in arguing for a ban on trade in Atlantic bluefin tuna. The 27 European Union nations agreed, despite opposition from Mediterranean island Malta, to urge a United Nations body that lists endangered species to vote for a ban when it meets in Qatar, starting on Saturday. Woody Plant Encroachment Has Increased Stream Flow In The Edwards Plateau
College Station TX (SPX) Mar 10, 2010
A new study by Texas AgriLife Research scientists finds that contrary to widespread perceptions, springs in the Edwards Plateau, which provide much of the stream flows, have not been declining as a result of increased encroachment of woody plants. In fact, spring flows are twice as high as they were prior to 1950. The study found that the landscape is actually recovering from intensive liv ... more

Fuel To The Fire
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Mar 09, 2010
What's adding fuel to the fire of climate change? Well, fire. Some stunning images recently taken by NASA's Aqua satellite show one of the Earth's latest firestorms - this one at the Dundes Nature Reserve in Western Australia. Nearly 200,000 acres have gone up in flames as of February 18. That's a lot of carbon added to the atmosphere. The red outlines are the active fires, and the smoky clouds are - of course - smoke. Dundes comes on the heels of the one year anniversary of "Black Saturday, ... read more
