Sydney (AFP) April 4, 2010
For Australian farmers who have struggled to make a living in southern Queensland as their crops died and their dams ran empty during years of drought, recent floods have ended the "Big Dry". "We've had the worst drought in a generation and now we're back to some of the best conditions in a generation," said cattleman John Cotter. Floods soak northeastern US
New York (AFP) March 31, 2010
The worst floods in decades washed over large areas of the northeastern United States on Thursday as authorities mobilized emergency services to brace for more to come. In one of the worst hit states, Rhode Island, Governor Donald Carcieri told all non-essential government employees to stay at home Wednesday, recommending that businesses, schools and local government buildings also close. Government officials said that flooding, which started on Monday, was the worst in Rhode Island since 1955. ... read more
