Plastic mulches have been used in vegetable production in the United States since the 1950s. Black plastic (polyethylene) mulch, which alters the plant's growing environment by generating warmer soil temperatures and holding more moisture than bare soil, is the standard mulch used in vegetable production. A new research study evaluated the effects of colored plastic mulches with and without row covers on growth and earliness of fruit production on okra. A large meteor streaked over the U.S. Midwest Wednesday, briefly lighting up the night sky and unleashing a sonic boom heard for hundreds of miles. A Qatari fund is buying a five-percent stake in French utility giant Veolia in a partnership to develop joint projects in the Middle East and North Africa, Veolia said in a statement on Friday. Landslides triggered by pounding rain in Rio de Janeiro last week killed at least 246 people, officials said Tuesday, adding that the city's famous Christ statue was cut off for the first time in its eight-decade history. The rise in the death toll reflected the discovery of more bodies in the wreckage of shantytowns knocked off their precarious mountainside perches by the landslides.
