Sudangrass Recommended To Combat Canada Thistle
Urbana-Champaign IL (SPX) May 11, 2010
Farmers who don't rely on or want to minimize the use of chemical herbicides need creative solutions to win the battle against aggressive perennial weeds. In ongoing research at the University of Illinois on Canada thistle, Sudangrass is proving to be a worthy contender as a summer smother crop. "Sudangrass get very tall. Wide-Eyed Proba-V Will Track Global Vegetation Daily
Paris, France (ESA) May 05, 2010
The small but powerful camera of ESA's Proba-V mission can fit on a single laboratory table for testing. But when it reaches orbit, this compact sensor will deliver a daily overview of virtually all vegetation growth across Earth. Daily global monitoring is an ambitious enough goal for a full-sized mission, but Proba is ESA's smallest satellite platform - smaller than a cubic metre. ... more

Large Amounts Of Nitrogen Stored Beneath Selected Agricultural Areas
Madison WI (SPX) May 05, 2010
Large amounts of nitrogen are stored in the soils of agricultural areas in Nebraska and Maryland, according to a new study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Once in the soil, nitrogen can be converted to nitrate, which can readily move to groundwater. "We expected to find nitrogen stored in organic matter in these soils, but didn't realize how much," said Tom Nolan, USGS hydrologist, who led the study.
