Bee 'pastures' could help agriculture
Washington (UPI) Aug 4, 2010
Human-tended "bee pastures" of wildflowers are an environmentally friendly way to produce generations of healthy bees to aid agriculture, U.S. researchers say. Researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture say pesticide-free human-tended pastures of a half-acre each can be easily established and would be easy to maintain, a department release said Wednesday. Bee pasturing isn't a new idea, researchers say, and two bee businesses are already using the findings to propagate more bees. ... read more

Outside View: Follow science on ethanol
Washington (UPI) Aug 3, 2010
"Pump first, ask questions later" seems to be the message of over-eager ethanol advocates trying to pressure the U.S. government to approve an increase in the amount of ethanol in gasoline by up to 50 percent. Common sense tells us that we'd all be a lot better off asking questions first. Four members of the U.S. Congress - Democrats Henry Waxman of California and Edward Markey of Mass ... more

Pakistan flooding death toll expected to rise
Peshawar, Pakistan (AFP) Aug 3, 2010
The death toll from Pakistan's devastating monsoon rains was expected to rise on Tuesday as fears grew of outbreaks of disease among the 2.5 million people affected by the floods. Up to 1,500 people have died in the country's northwest as floods and landslides triggered by unprecedented rain have destroyed homes and farmland in one of the country's most impoverished regions. Aid official ... more

Artificially Controlling Water Condensation Leads To 'Room-Temperature Ice'
College Park MD (SPX) Aug 02, 2010
Earth's climate is strongly influenced by the presence of particles of different shapes and origins in the form of dust, ice and pollutants that find their way into the lowest portion of the atmosphere, the troposphere. There, water adsorbed on the surface of these particles can freeze at higher temperatures than pure water droplets, triggering rain and snow. Researchers at Spain's Centre ... more

Mines and wines in Australia climate battle
Muswellbrook, Australia (AFP) Aug 1, 2010
Australian winemaker Brett Keating doesn't draw a parallel between the shorter, hotter seasons and slow creep of coal mining towards his land, but he is concerned. "This is a community that's benefited greatly from mining over the years, it's brought a lot of prosperity to the area," he explains. "We've coexisted with mining for years but in the last couple of years we just feel like the balance has flipped." His Hunter Valley winery, Two Rivers, just outside Denman north of Sydney, has been ... read more
