Drought Drives Decade-Long Decline In Plant Growth
Missoula MT (SPX) Aug 26, 2010
Earth has done an ecological about-face: Global plant productivity that once flourished under warming temperatures and a lengthened growing season is now on the decline, struck by the stress of drought. NASA-funded researchers Maosheng Zhao and Steven Running, of the University of Montana in Missoula, discovered the global shift during an analysis of NASA satellite data. Compared with a six-percent increase spanning two earlier decades, the recent ten-year decline is slight, just one percent. The ... read more

China cleans up after flooding by N.Korea border
Beijing (AFP) Aug 23, 2010
Workers in northeast China on Monday toiled to clean up the mess left by severe flooding that killed four people, forced 250,000 out of their homes and left parts of a city in North Korea under water. Heavy downpours last week swelled the Yalu river, which forms part of the border between China and North Korea, to dangerously high levels, sending water spilling over its banks on both sides, ... more

Pakistan president warns flood recovery could take years
Karachi (AFP) Aug 24, 2010
Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari warned the country could take three years or more to recover from near-month long floods as authorities battled to protect cities from rising waters. The floods have killed 1,500 people and affected up to 20 million nationwide in the country's worst natural disaster, with the threat of disease ever present in the camps sheltering survivors. "Your guess is as good as mine, but three years is a minimum," Zardari told reporters when asked how long it would take ... read more
