Wildflower Armors Itself Against Disease
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Sep 14, 2010
An unusual wildflower that accumulates metals in its leaves has been found to use them as a kind of 'armor' against bacterial infection. Scientists from Oxford University have shown that when Alpine pennycress (Thlaspi caerulescens) plants accumulate metals in their leaves, they become resistant to attack by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola. They report their findings September 9 in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens. Thlaspi, a small plant in the mustard family that grows on ... read more

Major risks seen in large farmland sales
Washington (UPI) Sep 10, 2010
Large-scale disposal of farmland by governments carries potential risks for their communities and the environment and will build economic and social pressures as new corporate or foreign state owners move in, a World Bank report warned. Drawing on firsthand data from 14 countries, the report followed persistent reports of large-scale farmland acquisitions by foreign investors, including ... more

Stanford Land-Use Expert Brings Satellite Data Down To Earth
Stanford CA (SPX) Sep 10, 2010
By integrating remote satellite imagery with revelations from door-to-door interviews, Stanford University geographer Eric Lambin and his colleagues are exploring the complex conditions that give rise to a broad range of land-use challenges - from the reforestation of Vietnam to the spread of Lyme disease in Belgium. For decades, orbiting satellites have peered downward to gather informati ... more

Satellites offer clues to forest fates
Washington (UPI) Sep 8, 2010
Rocketing numbers of pine beetles have decimated areas of forest from British Columbia to Colorado so large they can be detected by satellites, authorities say. NASA says scientists use Landsat satellite imagery to map these pine beetle outbreaks and determine what impact the beetle damage might have on forest fires. University of Wisconsin forest ecologists compared maps of area ... more

World Map Of Methane Concentrations
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Sep 09, 2010
What works on a small scale also works on a large scale. For the last several years, a helicopter-mounted measuring instrument developed by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has been hard at work detecting methane leaks from natural gas pipelines. From 2014, a similar instrument will be used on a German/French satellite orbiting Earth at an altitude of 650 kilometres. The climate mission Merlin (Methane Remote Sensing Lidar Mission) will track down the gr ... read more
