A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Antarctica on Monday, generating large waves but causing no injuries, seismic experts at Argentina's Orcadas base in Antarctica said.

"At 1103 local time (1403 GMT) on Monday, the seismological station ... registered an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale in the area near the base, with an epicenter 10 kilometers (six miles) deep," Argentina's Antarctic management said in a statement.

The earthquake did not cause any damage to the base or cause any injuries to the staff, it said, adding there were no reports of damage or injuries at other bases on the Antarctic peninsula.

Moderate quake strikes off Taiwan
Taipei (AFP) July 15, 2013 - A moderate 5.3-magnitude earthquake hit off the east coast of Taiwan Monday, the island's Seismology Centre said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The quake struck 115 kilometres (71 miles) east of Hualien city at 9.41 pm (1341 GMT), at a depth of 16 kilometres.

A strong 6.2-magnitude quake struck the island on June 3 leaving two dead and 21 injured, and was also felt in Hong Kong, more than 700 kilometres away.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes.

Geothermal power facility induces earthquakes, study finds
Santa Cruz CA (SPX) Jul 12, 2013
An analysis of earthquakes in the area around the Salton Sea Geothermal Field in southern California has found a strong correlation between seismic activity and operations for production of geothermal power, which involve pumping water into and out of an underground reservoir. "We show that the earthquake rate in the Salton Sea tracks a combination of the volume of fluid removed from the g ... read more
