Russia and the United States have completed 90% of the volume covered in an agreement on Russia processing highly enriched uranium to supply nuclear power plants in the U.S. according to press statements made on Monday by the press service of the National Nuclear Security Administration of the United States.

According to the organization currently over 450 tons of uranium have been processed.

The agreement originally signed in 1993 is informally referred to as the Megatons to Megawatts Program.

It is planned that the terms of the agreement will be fully implemented by the end of 2013, by which time 500 tons of uranium will have been processed.

The implementation of this agreement is considered one of the key missions relating to nuclear non-proliferation.
