Ashton heads for EU-China talks in Beijing
by Staff Writers
Brussels (AFP) July 8, 2012

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton left Sunday for Beijing where she will hold talks on foreign affairs and security issues on the first leg of a five-day Asian tour.

"Our partnership with China is one of inter-dependent equals who share broad common interests, and we have an obligation to engage on a wide range of global issues," Ashton said in a departure statement.

The meeting will be the third round of the high-level EU-China Strategic Dialogue, which will help prepare the ground for the next EU-China summit in Brussels in the autumn.

Ashton will meet with Premier Wen Jiabao, Chinese counterpart State Councillor Dai Bingguo and Defence Minister Liang Guanglie.

She and Dai attended the first Strategic Dialogue in September 2010 in the southwestern Chinese province of Guizhou. The second was held in Hungary in May 2011.

At the last EU-China summit, which was delayed from October 2011 to February this year because of the European sovereign debt crisis, China renewed its support for the euro.

After Beijing, Ashton will visit Hong Kong on Wednesday, and on Thursday she will attend a regional forum of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

"Our relations with Asia are of global consequence and, needless to say, of the utmost importance to the European Union," Ashton said, adding: "I am looking forward to this trip as an opportunity to deepen our strategic engagement and to strengthen these relations."

French FM says China ties a 'priority': Xinhua
Beijing (AFP) July 8, 2012 - French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has told China's official Xinhua news agency that ties between the two countries are a "priority" ahead of his official visit to China.

Speaking in an interview in Paris on Friday, which was published by the state-run news agency on Sunday, Fabius also called for more cooperation in the nuclear power and aerospace sectors.

"The relationship with China is a priority for the new French government. We are driven by a new ambition for our bilateral relationship," Fabius was quoted as saying.

He said the two countries could also cooperate on environmental protection and urban planning, Xinhua reported, but gave no details.

"We do not seek to impose our views on China or other countries, but we wish to have with your country a substantial and respectful dialogue," Fabius said.

The French minister will meet Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Li Keqiang -- widely expected to be the country's next premier -- among others in official meetings on Monday and Tuesday.
