At least 30 missing in Peru mudslide

 At least 30 people were missing in a mudslide that buried a community in northeastern Peru, killing at least three people, officials said Friday.

"So far, 12 people have been rescued," Jose Murgia, the chief executive of La Libertad province, said in an interview broadcast by Peruvian state television.

The mudslide, which extended 1.5 kilometers (a mile), hit the mountainside community of Chamanacucho Thursday following heavy rains. It is located 750 kilometers (450 miles) north of Lima.

Authorities estimated that between 30 and 60 people were missing.

"We presume there are still victims in the mud," said Sergio Rios, the governor of the district of Aricampa, where Chamanacucho is located.

Italian authorities warned over quake-zone buildings: report

 Officials in the quake-hit Abruzzo region failed to act on warnings from as far back as 1999 that hundreds of their public buildings were vulnerable to earthquakes, press reports said Thursday.
