China and Russia to hold energy talks later this year: Beijing
Beijing (AFP) July 29, 2008 China and Russia will hold their second round of talks on energy cooperation in Moscow later this year, the Chinese foreign ministry said Tuesday. The news follows a visit by Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin to Beijing over the weekend, where he met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Wang Qishan to launch a dialogue on energy cooperation. "We hope the two countries can enhance cooperation in energy development and make more progress in this area," foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told reporters. "Energy cooperation is part of the whole strategy of trade and economic cooperation." China wants to focus energy cooperation on crude oil trade, construction of oil and gas pipelines, prospecting and exploitation, and refining and chemical industries, the state-run China Daily reported Monday. "The cooperation in the energy sector is an issue of great significance for Sino-Russia relations," the newspaper said. "Russia is the world's largest energy exporter, and China is the second largest oil consumer. Such facts pave the foundation for their cooperation in the energy sector," the report added. The news section of sina.com, a popular Chinese web portal, on Tuesday quoted a Russian news website as saying the second round of talks would take place at the end of October.
