Beijing (AFP) May 4, 2011 Beijing said Wednesday it regrets a US decision to place China on a priority watch list for weak protection of intellectual property rights and called on Washington to fairly assess its efforts. The Special 301 Report released by US Trade Representative Ron Kirk on Monday said China was making progress on improving IPR protection but voiced concern about Beijing's longer term commitment. "China regrets the US decision," commerce ministry spokesman Yao Jian said in a statement. "We urge the United States to make a more comprehensive, objective and fair assessment of China's efforts to protect intellectual property rights." The report said a "special campaign" launched in October by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that targeted a range of violations such as software and trademark infringement might lead to "lasting improvements" in IPR enforcement. However, some companies and trade associations reported mixed results and "remain sceptical about whether current activity levels will be maintained once the special campaign ends." The campaign, originally slated to end in March, has been extended for another three months. The 12 countries on the priority watch list -- China, Russia, Algeria, Argentina, Canada, Chile, India, Indonesia, Israel, Pakistan, Thailand, and Venezuela -- will be the subject of "particularly intense" bilateral talks in the next year, according to the US report.
