The death toll from tropical storm Kammuri and subsequent floods has risen to at least 127 in northern Vietnam, with 34 others still listed as missing, an official said Friday.

"In recent days, we have been focussing our efforts on helping those in the disaster area," an official from the national flood and storm control committee told AFP.

Heavy rains followed by flash floods and landslides in Vietnam's northern mountainous provinces that began last week destroyed nearly 800 houses.

Some 17,800 other buildings were flooded and damaged while 15,200 hectares (37,500 acres) of crops were wiped out, the committee said.

Vietnam suffers hundreds of deaths every year as a result of floods and storms that often hit between July and November.

The official said the water levels of rivers in the north had dropped significantly.
