Detroit hydrogen buses may go regional

U.S. officials say tests of hydrogen-powered buses at the Detroit airport are designed to see if they can eventually be connected to regional mass transit.

The U.S. Energy Department and the Wayne County Airport Authority recently began using a pair of Ford hydrogen buses to shuttle passengers between the two terminals at Detroit Metro Airport and hope they will eventually link up with the new Detroit-Ann Arbor commuter rail that will begin operations next year.

"The idea is looking at whether hydrogen buses could be used to link the airport with a regional mass transit system," said project spokeswoman Brendan Prebo.

The Detroit News said Saturday that the coaches have been getting good reviews from riders, although they are only two of the 54 shuttle buses in operation at the airport.
