Viasat, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), a global satellite communications leader, has successfully demonstrated direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity in Saudi Arabia. This milestone event was showcased at the "Connecting the World from the Skies" gathering in Riyadh, organized by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

During the demonstration, Viasat sent two-way messages and SoS signals using satellite connectivity, facilitated through an Android smartphone equipped for non-terrestrial network (NTN) communication. This was achieved using the Bullitt over-the-top messaging application and the company's L-band satellite, which operates above the Indian Ocean. The initiative relied on a 3GPP standards-based NTN infrastructure, implemented at Viasat's gateways in partnership with Skylo, a key ecosystem partner.

D2D technology enables common devices such as smartphones, vehicles, and industrial equipment to integrate seamlessly with terrestrial and satellite networks without requiring specialized hardware. This technology is part of the 3GPP release 17 standards that are increasingly being adopted by satellite operators, mobile networks, and device manufacturers.

The demonstration highlighted the reliability of Viasat's L-band satellite services and the potential for integrating satellite connectivity directly with mobile phones in the region. Viasat's approach utilizes already-licensed satellite spectrum, ensuring compatibility with mobile operators without disrupting terrestrial spectrum usage.

"By expanding our direct-to-device innovation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, we're showcasing the potential for D2D services in the fast-growing Gulf and Asia-Pacific region," said Sandeep Moorthy, Chief Technical Officer of Viasat. "D2D could help reduce barriers to connectivity in regions where terrestrial services are spotty and unavailable to help transform industries and supply chains, enable new opportunities, and to become more efficient, sustainable and safer. We'd like to thank the CST for their support in carrying out this exciting demonstration."
