Addis Ababa (AFP) Jan 11, 2008
Ethiopia received millions of dollars in loans and grants on Friday in deals with China and India, officials said here.

China gave Ethiopia some four million dollars for agricultural and government administration projects, while India loaned the Horn of Africa nation 640 million dollars (433 million dollars) to boost sugar production.

"China is a very vital partner not only for Ethiopia, but also for Africa," Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin told a press conference.

The two Asian economic giants have an interest in oil exploration in Ethiopia's restive Ogaden region, which is also believed to be lying on large quantities of gas, although further studies are needed to verify the exact amount.

Analysis: Celtic Tiger roars in Ashgabat
Washington (UPI) Jan 11, 2008
For Western companies interested in exploiting the Caspian's last frontier, 2007 opened with great promise. Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov died Dec. 21, 2006, and the country's new president, Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, seemed to presage new possibilities for ending the country's isolationist, neutralist policies. Foreign leaders and oil company executives from around the world flooded into Ashgabat in an attempt to secure a slice of the country's vast hydrocarbon riches, particularly its natural gas reserves, estimated to be the fourth-largest in the world.
