European Greens urge Jill Stein to withdraw from US election
European Greens urge Jill Stein to withdraw from US election

European Green parties issued a joint call Friday for fellow environmentalist Jill Stein to withdraw from the US election -- for fear her candidacy could siphon away Democratic votes and clinch the presidency for Donald Trump.

"Right now, the race for the White House is too close for comfort," said a statement co-signed by 18 national parties as well as the Greens -- the environmentalist bloc in the European Parliament -- with just days to go until Tuesday's election.

"We call on Jill Stein to withdraw from the race, and endorse Kamala Harris for the presidency of the United States," they wrote, calling the Democratic vice-president "the only candidate who can block Donald Trump and his anti-democratic, authoritarian policies from the White House."

"The stakes of these elections could not be higher," wrote the parties. "Climate policies require democratic institutions, which we fear would be dismantled if Trump is elected."

The groups also highlighted their opposition to policy plans by the Republican former president they said would extend curbs on abortion and curtail LGBTQ and immigrant rights, if he secures a second term.

Stein is on the ballot in nearly every battleground US state -- and while the perennial Green Party candidate has no chance of winning, many Democrats fear her candidacy could stymie their White House chances.

Democrats recently ran a campaign ad attacking Stein that aired in three critical swing states -- Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania -- warning that "a vote for Stein is really a vote for Trump."

Republicans won Wisconsin for the first time in nearly three decades in 2016, when Hillary Clinton lost by just under 23,000 votes to Trump -- a shock defeat that some Democrats blamed on Stein for taking around 31,000 votes.

The European Greens issued their appeal even though they have no formal link with the US Greens, which are no longer a member of the global organisation of Green parties, the statement noted.

UN rapporteur urges climate activist's release ahead of COP29
Geneva (AFP) Oct 31, 2024
The UN rapporteur on environmental defenders on Thursday urged Azerbaijan to free Anar Mammadli, saying his detention seemed aimed at silencing climate advocates ahead of November's COP29 summit. Michel Forst voiced alarm over the alleged "persecution, penalisation and harassment" of Mammadli, who has now been in pre-trial detention for six months on "allegedly trumped-up criminal charges" in what the rapporteur called "apparent reprisal for his environmental activism". "I am gravely concerned a ... read more
