The new Expedition 34 trio of Flight Engineers Chris Hadfield, Roman Romanenko and Tom Marshburn wrapped up its first full week aboard the International Space Station on Friday. They along with Commander Kevin Ford and Flight Engineers Oleg Novitskiy and Evgeny Tarelkin will have a light-duty weekend and ring in the New Year together.

The new trio continued more handover training as they familiarized themselves with station systems. They also conducted a drill to practice communication and coordination in the event of a medical emergency onboard the station.

Hadfield started his morning inspecting a furnace that is part of the Materials Science Laboratory (MSL) in the Destiny lab. Ford photographed the inside of the furnace for analysis on the ground. The MSL is a module located inside the Materials Science Research Rack which enables the study of chemical and thermal properties of materials in microgravity.

Marshburn began his day with some plumbing work as he transferred water from an auxiliary port to an iodinated contingency water container. He also checked the contents of a science freezer retrieving and stowing various items and reporting to the ground any discrepancies from an inventory list.

Ford spent part of his afternoon working with the InSpace-3 experiment which studies the physical properties of microscopic solids in fluids, or colloids, exposed to various magnetic fields. The commander also installed and routed a cable extension inside the cupola for the joint station local area network.

All three cosmonauts got together beginning their morning downlinking a New Year's greeting for the Russian Federal Space Agency, or Roscosmos. Novitskiy and Tarelkin then continued their work with the Typology experiment which studies a crew member's work performance in space. Romanenko worked to fill a tank inside a docked Progress resupply craft.
