Five killed in China factory accident: state media
Beijing (AFP) Nov 11, 2008 Five factory workers died and one was critically injured when a structure they were building in northwestern China collapsed, state media reported on Tuesday. The report by Xinhua news agency revised an earlier dispatch that blamed the collapse and resulting deaths on a 6.5-magnitude earthquake that struck Qinghai province on Monday. The accident occurred Monday afternoon at a cement factory in the town of Donghe near the provincial capital of Xining, Xinhua said. Workers building a new workshop were lifting a girder into place with a crane when the girder struck the structure, causing it to crumble to the ground. Xinhua had earlier reported that the collapse was caused by Monday morning's earthquake, which struck north of the city of Golmud, about 615 kilometres (380 miles) west of Xining. There have been no other reports of deaths from the quake. The quake shook buildings hundreds of kilometres away and sent people fleeing into the streets. Share This Article With Planet Earth
