Chicago (AFP) Sept 2, 2010
Times may be difficult at home for US auto giant Ford, but business is looking good in China and India, according to sales figures published Thursday.

The company said sales in the two emerging economic powers increased 37 percent in August versus the same month a year before, affirming their status as "the world's fastest growing automotive markets."

Sales in India posted a whopping 220 percent increase, the firm reported, although a modest 7,925 units were sold.

Sales in China rose to 44,047 units for the month, a 24 percent increase.

Ford has said it expects 70 percent of its growth to come from Asia Pacific and Africa regions in the next decade.

"We have big plans for India, China and the region," said Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Asia Pacific. "The growth potential in this part of the world in the next ten years is astounding."
