Deauville, France (AFP) May 26, 2011 G8 leaders meeting in France are to express complete confidence that their partner Japan will make a full recovery from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, according to a draft statement Thursday. "In the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, we expressed heartfelt sympathy for the victims and solidarity with the people and government of Japan," said the proposed communique, seen by AFP. "We are fully confident in the ability of the Japanese authorities to respond to the challenge and build a speedy and lasting recovery, and we stand ready to assist as needed," it said. President Nicolas Sarkozy of France is hosting counterparts from Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States in the Channel resort of Deauville for the annual G8 summit. Nuclear safety is high on the agenda following the earthquake in Japan, which triggered a tsunami wave that devastated several towns, killed 25,000 people and flooded the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
