Gazprom mulls LNG export future with Kuwait

Russian energy company Gazprom said it was looking at ways to expand the level of cooperation in the gas sector with its counterparts in Kuwait.

Gazprom Chairman Alexei Miller met in Moscow with Kuwaiti Ambassador to Russia Abdulaziz al-Adwani for a working meeting to address options for expanded ties in the oil and gas sector.

"In particular, they addressed the cooperation broadening as part of Gazprom's liquified natural gas supplies," the Russian energy company said in a statement Tuesday.

Gazprom said Kuwait produced about 545 billion cubic feet of natural gas in 2012, but consumed 640 billion cubic feet. The shortfall was made up for by imports of LNG.

The Russian energy company said it has delivered only two LNG shipments to Kuwait since 2011.

Russia holds the largest natural gas reserves in the world. It's focused its LNG efforts primarily on Asian markets, where demand is surging along with regional economies.
