Japan lifts tsunami warning
Tokyo (AFP) Sept 11, 2008 Japan's Meteorological Agency lifted a tsunami warning issued after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Thursday in the north of the country. The agency had warned tsunami waves as high as 50 centimetres (20 inches) could hit the eastern coast of Japan's northern island of Hokkaido as well as Pacific shores of the main island of Honshu. The agency lifted the warning for all regions after waves that were only some 10 centimetres high struck the coast. The undersea earthquake occurred at 9:21 am (0021 GMT) 20 kilometres deep (12.4 miles) off Hokkaido's Tokachi region, some 700 kilometres north of Tokyo. There were no reports of injuries or damage. Japan is hit by 20 percent of the world's powerful earthquakes.
