Mechanical fault puts French aircraft-carrier out of action
Paris (AFP) March 13, 2009 France's sole aircraft-carrier, the nuclear-powered Charles de Gaulle, was out of action again Friday, only months after undergoing a lengthy refit, the navy said. The pride of the French fleet would be immobilised for weeks if not months after abnormal wear was discovered in links between the two of the four turbines and their propellor shafts, a statement said. The problem was discovered when excessive vibration was detected, the navy said, adding that further examination was required. The Charles de Gaulle, which entered service in 2001, was working up following its first major refit which lasted 18 months and ended in November.
