NATO soldiers probed over alleged Afghan abuse
by Staff Writers
Kabul (AFP) May 8, 2013

The US-led NATO force fighting Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan said Wednesday it has launched an investigation into alleged misconduct by its soldiers.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) statement said that the probe would examine a clash on April 28 in the southern province of Zabul when four insurgent fighters were killed.

It did not disclose further details about allegations against the troops.

"I have informed the Afghan government of the situation. ISAF will do a very thorough investigation, and if appropriate, we will take action against the personnel involved," US General Joseph Dunford, the ISAF commander, said.

"We take all allegations of misconduct by our personnel very seriously."

The 100,000-strong international force will end its combat mission in Afghanistan by the end of next year and Afghan troops will soon take responsibility for security nationwide.

About 66,000 US troops serve in the coalition.
