The U.S. Navy has given Newport News Shipbuilding a $106 million contract to provide engineering and industrial support for submarines.

Special mission submersibles, submarine support facilities and related programs are also covered by the contract, which is under immediate effect.

Huntington Ingalls Industries, parent company of Newport News Shipbuilding, said the contract will be worth a total of $564 million if all options are exercised.

"Receiving this contract allows Newport News Shipbuilding to continue decades of delivering the best engineering, design and logistics support for U.S. Navy submarines," said Jennifer Boykin, Newport News' vice president, engineering and design. "We look forward to providing continued support to the operational readiness of our nation's submarine force."

Work under the contract will include engineering, design, configuration management, integrated logistic support, database management, research and development, modernization and industrial support.

Work under the contract is expected to be completed by September of 2019.
