New Zealand quake toll officially put at 184: report
by Staff Writers
Wellington (AFP) Feb 4, 2012

The death toll from the devastating earthquake in the New Zealand city of Christchurch last February has been increased to 184, it was reported Saturday.

The coroner initially found 181 people were killed as a direct result of the 6.3-magnitude tremor, but another three deaths have now been recorded as quake related, the Press newspaper said.

They included a 76-year-old woman, Elizabeth Sinclair, who died two weeks after the quake in which she fractured a hip and after surgery contracted pneumonia from which she never recovered.

Her husband, Ivan Sinclair, told the newspaper the announcement his wife was now listed among the earthquake victims did not mean much.

"It means if there hadn't been a bloody earthquake she might not be dead. That's all," he said.

Since September 2010, Christchurch has been rocked by more than 400 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or stronger, including 40 greater than magnitude 5.0 with the cost of the tremors expected to reach NZ$30 billion ($24.5 billion).
