Obama welcomes Canada's move on Afghan trainers

by Staff Writers
Washington (AFP) Nov 16, 2010
US President Barack Obama on Tuesday welcomed a decision to send up to 950 Canadian military trainers to Afghanistan, saying it underscored Canada's "important" role in the country.

President Obama "welcomes" the announcement, which "underscores the very important constructive role" of Canada in Afghanistan, Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes said in a conference call with reporters.

Canadian ministers had earlier said the country would send the military trainers to Afghanistan to help Afghan soldiers take over security after Canada's own 2,800 combat troops exit next year.
