Pan Asia Solar Invests In Polysilicon Producer
Padova, Italy (SPX) Aug 20, 2008 Silfab and Pan Asia Solar recently announced an agreement that makes PAS a strategic partner in Silfab, along with Silfab's CEO and Founder, Franco Traverso. Traverso, a pioneer in the photovoltaic sector with more than 25 years' experience, and PAS plan to contribute a total of 54 million euros to the establishment of Silfab by September 2008, through a joint venture company, GridCo Srl. With this investment, Silfab is on track to become one of the world's largest manufacturers of high-purity polysilicon destined for use in the fast-growing PV industry. Production of up to 5,000 tons per year of ultra-high quality 9N-grade polysilicon is scheduled to begin in Q4 2009 at its manufacturing plant in Borgofranco d'Ivrea, in the Piedmont region of Italy. Ted Szpitalak, Principal of PAS and Co-founder of successful photovoltaic producers JA Solar and Suntech, said that a key consideration in his team's decision to partner with Traverso was Silfab's high-purity approach to polysilicon production. "We believe the production of ultra-high quality 9N-grade polysilicon will be one of the primary drivers of cell system efficiency increases in the future," said Szpitalak. "This is in stark contrast to most new producers, who aim for a 6N product." He continued, "PAS has searched for years for an avenue into the high-purity polysilicon segment of the PV supply chain. The partnership with Traverso and Silfab provides multiple avenues of collaboration with PAS portfolio companies, including cell producer Sunrise Global Solar Energy of Taiwan, one of our earliest capital investments." In keeping with solar energy's ultimate aim to provide clean, renewable energy, Silfab is designing its Italian plant with sustainability in mind. Traverso commented: "All of Silfab's production facilities are being engineered with the highest environmental standards in mind. Our aim is for Silfab to set the global benchmark for environmental sustainability in high-purity polysilicon production." Traverso added, "PAS brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the PV industry to Silfab, we are thrilled that they have chosen to partner with us."
