Los Angeles CA (SPX) Nov 17, 2010 PermaCity Solar has announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted two patents for flexible photovoltaic array wiring and control and Z/C system brackets, both invented by CEO, Jonathan Port. The flexible thin film patent, number 7,812,247, would allow for a lighter and less cumbersome solar power system. Specifically, this flexible system would require fewer modules to generate the desired power. Additionally it would allow for easier installations on roofs obstructed by vents, skylights, heating, or ventilation and air conditioning equipment. Conventional systems often require a greater number of modules and may exceed the roof's structural limits thereby preventing installation. The patent will be co-owned by Ascent Solar, a manufacturer of thin-film photovoltaic modules that can be more flexible and affordable than most traditional solar panels. The Z/C system patent, number 7,814,899, would allow for a solar panel mounting system that would minimize the number of attachment mechanisms and thus facilitate installation and provide greater freedom of mounting positions. Existing mounting structures are often limited in terms of the type of surface they can be attached to, their ability to affix adjoining panels with a single system, and the positioning of the panels on the mounting surface. These brackets were designed for PermaCity's solar installations at large warehouse facilities, reaffirming their commitment to effective solutions to meet customer needs. More than 15 MWs have been installed. PermaCity CEO, Jonathan Port, comments: "The Z/C system patent reduces parts on the roof, simplifies construction, and makes for an architecturally elegant installation. Our vision is to provide high quality solutions that are extremely cost effective. We do that by minimizing redundancies, removing unnecessary parts and effectively streamlining installation." Chief Technology Officer, H.D. Boesch continues: "We have been able to see where thin-film technology is going and believe it will open up new frontiers for architectural and ultra lightweight solar.
