According to an announcement made by officials at the Russian spaceport of Baikonur in Kazakhstan, the remainder of this year should see four satellite launches performed with the help of the Proton geostationary booster.

The first three months of next year should see at least four more.

In all 8 instances, Russian military and international telecommunications and Earth surveillance satellites are to be put into orbit.

On Monday, a Proton booster successfully orbited a European television satellite.

It was the first Proton launch since July 2 when a botched Proton mission resulted in the loss of three satellites which were to join the constellation of Russia's GLONASS global navigation and positioning system.
