Romanian nuclear reactor stopped due to technical problem
by Staff Writers
Bucharest (AFP) Dec 19, 2011

A Romanian nuclear reactor was stopped on Monday because of a technical problem but all security systems are functioning properly, the national operator Nuclearelectrica said.

"Reactor number 2 was stopped in order to fix a demineralised water leakage that prevents this unit from running in optimal conditions", the national company said in a press release.

The reactor was stopped at 07H30 GMT and "should be restarted in about 48 hours after the leakage will be fixed and test be carried", a Nuclearelectrica's spokeswoman told AFP.

Romania counts one nuclear plant in Cernavoda (south-east) with two reactors using the Candu-type Canadian technology. They produce about 18 percent of the country's electricity needs.
