Second deadly avalanche hits Spanish Pyrenees; Three killed in avalanches in northern Italy: rescuers

An avalanche near a mountain resort in the Spanish Pyrenees killed a snowshoer, police said Thursday, days after another avalanche in the area killed three skiers.

The body of the man was found Thursday in the Bielsa Valley in the northeastern Aragon region, the Civil Guard said.

Two men were caught in the avalanche while snowshoeing on Wednesday, trapping one beneath the snow while the other escaped unharmed and was able to raise the alarm from a nearby mountain refuge.

The Civil Guard released a video showing officers with shovels, backed by rescue dogs, searching for the man swept up by the avalanche.

On Monday, an avalanche in the same area killed two men and a woman who were skiing. Another woman suffered mild hypothermia.

Authorities urged caution in mountainous areas amid winter weather and continuing avalanche risk.

Three killed in avalanches in northern Italy: rescuers
Milan, Italy (AFP) Jan 2, 2026 - Three people died in avalanches in Italy on Friday, including a French national and a German woman in the northwest of the country, mountain rescue services reported.

Two skiers were caught in an avalanche at an altitude of 2,300 metres (7,545 feet) at about noon local time (1100 GMT) in Piedmont near the border with France.

They were freed by other skiers but one of them, the German woman, was dead when a rescue helicopter arrived.

A French skier was caught in another avalanche a few kilometres to the north at Bobbio Pellice, near Turin.

The alarm was raised via a GPS device and another Frenchman who was skiing with him reached a mountain refuge and described what had happened.

But the first skier was dead by the time rescuers arrived.

Heavy snowfall around Christmas, followed by milder temperatures and strong winds, may have contributed to triggering the avalanches, a rescue spokesperson said.

A 50-year-old Italian mountaineer died on Friday morning in the Dolomites in northeast Italy when he was swept away by an avalanche while hiking with a friend.
