Snow disrupts air travel in Switzerland

Geneva (AFP) Dec 17, 2010
Geneva airport was closed for several hours on Friday after overnight snow in Switzerland disrupted air travel, airport officials said.

Up to 15 centimetres (six inches) of snow blanketed low lying areas of the country forcing the scheduled opening of the airport at 6:00 am to be delayed. More snow was expected later in the day.

"The airport reopened at 9.30 am (0830 GMT) Friday morning," Geneva airport spokesman Aline Yazgi told AFP.

About 30 flights were affected, although main roads were largely cleared in the western Swiss city with only minor disruption to public transport.

"We worked all night with 75 vehicles and about 100 men are still at the task," said airport spokesman Bertrand Stamepfli as it rushed to reopen in time for the arrival of long haul flights.

The country's biggest airport in the northeastern city of Zurich was open and running despite heavy snowfall, with 40 cancellations of incoming and outbound flights, a spokeswoman said.

Basel-Mulhouse opened as normal at 5.30 am (0430 GMT) despite a blizzard with just two cancellations and a few delays, an airport official said.
