Mount Fuji, the tallest peak in Japan, has experienced its first snowfall following one of the longest snow-free periods on record in 130 years.

On 7 November, the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission documented this significant event, capturing a clear image of Mount Fuji's iconic snowcap. This observation came just a day after the Shizuoka branch of the Japan Meteorological Agency first reported snowfall on the mountain.

The Sentinel-2 mission, part of the European Space Agency's Copernicus program, is equipped with a high-resolution multispectral imager capable of acquiring optical images ranging from visible light to the shortwave-infrared spectrum. This versatile instrument supports numerous applications, such as precision agriculture, monitoring water quality, and aiding in the management of natural disasters.
