Softbank head to set up energy foundation: reports

by Staff Writers
Tokyo (AFP) April 20, 2011
The president of Japanese telecom giant Softbank will set up an advisory group on the use of natural energy sources following Japan's nuclear plant crisis, press reports said Wednesday.

Masayoshi Son will spend at least one billion yen ($12 million) of his own money to establish the foundation within a few months, Kyodo news agency and the Internet edition of the Nikkei daily said.

The foundation will consult about 100 scientists around the world and advise the government on the use of natural energy sources such as solar, wind and geothermal power, the reports said.

His company said earlier this month that Son will donate 10 billion yen to support victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which also crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The 53-year-old Son also plans to donate his salary to support children who lost their parents due to the disaster.
