Solar And Semiconductor Executives See Bright Future In Germany
Berlin, Germany (SPX) Jul 10, 2007 Germany has become one of the top locations for solar and semiconductor investments and is the center for next-generation chip and photovoltaic (PV) technologies in Europe. Four leading executives in the solar and semiconductor industries will describe developments in synergies and technologies at Invest in Germany's executive briefing during this year's SEMICON West on July 17th. The emerging overlaps between the solar and semiconductor industries will be one theme of the briefing. Dr. Winfried Hoffmann, Chief Technology Officer of the Solar Business Group for Applied Materials will speak from the perspective of the world's largest equipment supplier for the chip industry. In his presentation, entitled "PV Solar Electricity-a future major technology" Dr. Hoffmann will discuss Applied Materials' move to implement the engineering techniques for chip equipment into the solar industry. Applied Materials recently became the equipment supplier for Signet Solar, a California based start-up that is one of the pioneers in the production of low cost silicon thin film PV modules. Signet Solar's Managing Director for Germany, Gunter Ziegenbalg, will follow Dr. Hoffmann's talk with a presentation discussing how Signet Solar has been able to draw from Silicon Saxony's experience in semiconductor and renewable energy to set up its first volume plant near Dresden, Germany. Dresden features an unparalleled density of world-leading device manufacturers and suppliers for materials and equipment across the semiconductor value chain. William Haerle, Associate General Counsel and Vice President for Worldwide Government Relations at AMD, will discuss his company's ten-year engagement in Dresden. AMD currently operates two plants in Dresden, with major capacity upgrades in progress, and has invested more than US$5 billion in the region over the last ten years. Closing the session will be Frank Prein, Vice President for Technology and Managing Director of Qimonda Dresden. Qimonda's 300 mm DRAM plant and its R and D center in Dresden play a leading role within its worldwide "Fab Cluster." Mr. Prein will speak about the advantages of Dresden for semiconductor technology development. Blue Square Energy Wins Solar America Initiative Grant From Department Of Energy
North East MD (SPX) Jun 28, 2007Blue Square Energy (BSE) announced that it has been chosen to participate in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Solar America Initiative, Photovoltaic (PV) Module Incubator Project. BSE will receive approximately $3 million to address the challenges related to reducing the cost, improving the performance, and expanding the manufacturing capacity of innovative solar technologies to move from small-scale to pilot production. The announcement was made by DOE Secretary Samuel W. Bodman during his keynote remarks to the Renewable Energy Finance Forum of the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE). |
