Southern Austrian villages cut off due to avalanche risk

 Parts of Carinthia in southern Austria were cut off Monday because of a high risk of avalanche following heavy snowfall over the weekend, the Austria Press Agency reported.

The road leading to the small village of Bad Bleiberg was shut and some eight houses located in the danger zone were evacuated.

It was unclear how long the closure would last.

Elsewhere, the Lesachtal valley was blocked off until Thursday.

Local authorities also warned skiers not to stray from marked slopes, raising the avalanche warning to level four, just below the top warning level.

In central Salzburg province, several highways and alpine roads were closed earlier Monday, causing kilometre-long jams, but they were later reopened.
