Spanish energy company Iberdrola said Monday more than half of its global facilities and nearly all of its Spanish operations were emissions-free last year.

The company said it demonstrated its commitment to a clean-energy economy last year, with 57 percent of its global footprint and 91 percent of its Spanish operations emissions-free last year.

"For a company like Iberdrola, the environmental dimension is the cornerstone of the concept of sustainability," it said in a statement. "The company acknowledges its importance by including respect for the environment in the concepts that define the company."

Representatives from Iberdrola joined more than 100 of their European counterparts at a climate summit in New York last year. There, the company said it would strive to cut its emissions to a level that's at least 20 percent lower than the average for the European sector in 2020.

In the Spanish economy alone, the company boasted Monday that emissions of carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas, dropped 13 percent year-on-year during January to December 2014.

"The world is in the middle of a transition toward a sustainable energy model, which must necessarily be built with three fundamental aspects in mind: competitiveness, security of supply and respect for the environment," it said Monday.

The company said it has one of the most balanced portfolios in the world, with the bulk of its portfolio coming from renewable resources.
