Miami (AFP) Sept 11, 2010 Tropical Storm Igor, churning in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, strengthened late Saturday and reached hurricane status, US government forecasters said. "Igor is a category one hurricane of the Saffir-Simpson scale," the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said. "Additional strengthening is forecast, and Igor could reach major hurricane strength by late Monday." At 0300 GMT Sunday, the hurricane packed sustained winds of 75 miles (120 kilometers) an hour. Its center was located 1,275 miles (2,050 kilometers) east of the Leeward Islands and was moving west at 17 miles (28 kilometers) an hour, according to the NHC.
