Planning yard work, engineering and technical support for U.S. Navy nuclear submarines is to be conducted by General Dynamics Electric boat.

The company said the Navy contract it received for the work is worth $234 million. However, if all options are exercised over the five-year life of the award, the potential total value would be $1.5 billion.

The work to be provided includes design, engineering, material and logistics support, and research and development activities for active U.S. submarines and submersibles.

"Electric Boat also will provide information services, planning, scheduling and technical support for submarine maintenance and modernization activities, training and facility support, and affordability and cost reduction support," the company said.

General Dynamics Electric Boat's engineering and design organization will perform the required tasks.

Additional contract details were not disclosed by the company
