Swiss engineer in nuclear secrets probe freed on bail: report

A Swiss engineer who was arrested four years ago on suspicion of smuggling nuclear secrets to Libya has been freed on bail, Swiss newspaper NZZ am Sonntag reported Sunday.

Urs Tinner, 43, "was on Monday freed on bail of 10,000 Swiss francs (9,350 dollars or 6,650 euros) from remand in Zurich," said the newspaper.

His brother Marco remains in prison.

The two brothers and their father were arrested in Germany in October 2004 and then extradited to Switzerland in May 2005. The father was released in 2006.

They are accused of helping Libya develop a nuclear weapons programme and were alleged to have been in contact with Abdul Qadeer Khan, the disgraced father of Pakistan's nuclear programme.

Libya publically renounced its nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programmes in 2004.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Tuesday dismissed as fiction a report alleging that Iran is dodging UN sanctions by using Venezuelan aircraft to ship missile parts to Syria.
