Syria opposition chief urges arming of rebels
by Staff Writers
Abu Dhabi (AFP) July 29, 2012

The head of the exiled Syrian opposition urged on Saturday Arab "brothers" and friends to arm the rebels against the forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

"We want weapons that would stop tanks and jet fighters. That is what we want," said the head of the Syrian National Council Abdel Basset Sayda in Abu Dhabi as regime forces launched an all-out assault on the northern city of Aleppo.

He urged Arab "brothers and friends to support the Free (Syrian) Army" saying the support should be "qualitative because the rebels are fighting with old weapons."

He said that the rebellion needs support in order to achieve a "significant change" in the uprising that began in March last year.

"There should be relief support, but also support that allows this people to defend itself against the machine of killing," he said.

Sayda pointed out that the opposition needs a minimum of $145 million monthly to provide basic needs, while it has received only $15 million over several months.

He meanwhile thanked Saudi Arabia for organising a five-day fundraising campaign which concluded on Friday after collecting over $72 million.

Syria rebels capture 150 troops in Aleppo, Idlib: NGO
Beirut (AFP) July 27, 2012 - Syrian rebels on Friday captured 150 regime troops and militia members in the northern city of Aleppo and the northwestern province of Idlib, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

It reported rebels as saying they had captured 100 regime soldiers and militia members in Aleppo and another 50 in Idlib, citing videos distributed by Syrian activists.

The video of dozens of men in civilian clothing seated in a courtyard in Aleppo was filmed by a man describing himself as a member of the rebel Free Syrian Army.

The captured men tell the camera that they are in the Syrian army and the "shabiha" pro-regime militia.

"I am Colonel Mohammed Rashid Mohammed al-Mhmeid... I was arrested at the entrance of Aleppo," one says.

"I am Captain Fuad al-Hosh, commander of the Aleppo police in Shaar district. I was captured when I left my post," says another.

One man identifies himself as a member of the shabiha, saying he was captured in Hanano in Aleppo and had "killed a demonstrator."

Both rebels and troops have been massing in Aleppo for a major battle, but fighting has already taken place, including in the southern district of Salaheddin.

The Observatory said the second video shows the aftermath of fighting in the town of Maaret al-Numan in Idlib.

"After clashes that lasted 12 hours, rebels destroyed a military security post and captured 50 regime troops, including 14 officers," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP by phone.

Abdul Rahman said the fighters seized a large amount of weapons and ammunition from the military post near a checkpoint.

In the video posted on YouTube, rebels in civilian clothing are seen rummaging through what appears to be an old building used as government offices.

The person recording the footage walks through an arched hallway into an adjacent room, where a body with a severed arm lies on the floor.

One man tells the others: "Pee on him."

"No, he's already dead. Show some respect," another retorts.

Outside, the streets are littered with debris and teenage boys and men walk freely, toting Kalashnikov assault rifles.

"This is the largest street in Maaret al-Numan, which was controlled by the regime. It is now in the hands of the local rebels." the cameraman is heard to say.

Iran, Syria on agenda in US defense chief's Mideast tour
Washington (AFP) July 29, 2012 - US defense chief Leon Panetta sets off on an international tour Monday that, after Tunis and Cairo, takes him to Israel and Jordan, in a region that feels threatened by Iran's nuclear program and potential spillover from troubled Syria.

In Jerusalem, the secretary of defense will discuss regional issues with his Israeli counterpart Ehud Barak, among other leaders of the Jewish state.

"Clearly, we're gonna talk about Iran," said one senior US defense staffer, who asked not to be named.

Israeli leaders, who believe Iran's nuclear program endangers their country's existence, periodically threaten the Islamic Republic with military intervention. The United States continues to favor sanctions and diplomacy to convince Tehran to renounce its nuclear aspirations.

Israeli and American defense authorities have met several times in recent months, and this latest visit is "a matter of routine business with Israel and the region," said another senior US defense official.

US and Israeli authorities are also expected to discuss the ongoing conflict in Syria. Jerusalem has sent reinforcements to the Golan Heights, and has tightened security along its armistice line with Damascus.

A major US ally in the region, Israel receives $3 billion in US military aid each year. Washington recently passed a law allowing Israel greater access to US weapons and ammunition.

Panetta is also slated to meet with Jordan's King Abdullah II. Amman is coping with the presence of some 140,000 and has beefed up security along its border with Syria.

Amman holds "daily meetings to discuss the possibility of deploying special forces (to Syria) if the Syrian regime fails to secure its chemical and biological weapons," said a source close to the Jordanian government.

Earlier however Panetta will visit Tunisia to welcome what US officials call a "relatively stable and successful transition" to democratic rule.

Panetta is expected to discuss future military partnerships with the North African nation.

In Egypt, Panetta will meet with the head of Cairo's military government, Marshal Hussein Tantawi, whom he is expected to remind of the armed forces' commitment to transfer power to a democratically elected government.

The Muslim Brotherhood's President Mohamed Morsi took office in Cairo nearly a month ago.
