Taipei (AFP) Aug 4, 2010 Taiwan expects procurement delegations from China to place orders in excess of 20 billion US dollars this year, up more than 30 percent from last year, local media reported Wednesday. "I believe China's procurement of goods here will rise sharply this year to 20 billion dollars," Wang Chih-kang, chairman of the quasi-official Taiwan External Trade Development Council, told the Economic Daily News. China has sent nine official delegations to Taiwan so far this year on high-profile trips signalling willingness to help the island's economy by boosting demand. One of the groups, consisting of TV makers from different parts of China, bought 5.3 billion dollars' worth of flat-screens when it visited Taiwan in May. Last year, delegations from China bought 15.2 billion dollars worth of goods in Taiwan. China regards Taiwan as part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary, although the island has been self-governed since the end of a civil war in 1949. But ties have warmed since the China-friendly Ma Ying-jeou administration took office in 2008, with the two sides signing agreements that have led to regular direct flights, increased investment opportunities and a tourist boom.
earlier related report Aviation officials will hold talks in the southeastern Chinese city of Xiamen, the Central News Agency said, citing unnamed sources. In May Taiwan and China raised the number of weekly cross-strait flights to 370 from 270, reflecting booming trade and travel. But the agreement has been only partially implemented as the two disagree on how to allocate some of the additional flights, prompting new talks. The two sides launched direct chartered flights in 2008 and scheduled flights last year, reflecting a warming of ties under Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou, who took office two years ago. But Beijing still considers self-ruled Taiwan a part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary. Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration declined to comment on the report, citing a confidentiality agreement with China.
